Abstract: | North East India comprising seven political units, namely, Assam, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura is the homeland of large number of tribes which are put under the common bigger ethnic group called the Indo-Mongoloid. Assam can be termed as the caldron of various ethnic groups. In Assam we may find fifteen numbers of hill tribes and fourteen numbers of plain tribes. Thus people of Assam inhabit in a multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic and multi-religious society. The tribal people of Assam have significant contribution in the development of the great Assamese society. Assam had been given birth numbers of prominent tribal personalities in different periods of time. And these wise tribal sons through their dedications have enriched the repository of Assam since time immemorial. We may find great scholar, social reformer, artists, social worker and freedom fighter among different tribal groups of Assam who contributed in the all round development of Assam since long past. |
