TRIBAL WOODEN ART A MONOGRAPH STUDY

Abstract

The state of Chhattisgarh has been rich in various arts like art of dancing, metal art, clay art and wood art. This monograph study is based on the woodart prevalent among the tribes of the state and it was conducted in all the seven districts of Bastar division. Woodart means carving or digging wood or bamboo and creating different shapes to give it an artistic appearance. Ghotul pillars, the gate of Devgudi, wooden comb (kakwa), wooden memorial pillars and various types of mask can be considered as the evidence of wood art in the Bastar Region. The reflections of tribal lifestyles such as practices, useful objects, totems, trees like mahua, forest products are being made by wood artists of Bastar region on wood or bamboo. The study highlights the tools used by wood artists, shapes and design of wood art, project run by the government for the development of handicrafts and the problems existing in the wood craft sector.
