Entrepreneurship in Nagaland: A Gender Perspective

Abstract

Although the equal rights of male and female are guaranteed by law in most economies, female s disadvantage in labour markets is still an issue. In the Global Gender Gap Index, India is ranked on the 87th amongst 144 countries and ranked 136th in the Economic Participation and Opportunity Index. Lately, a business owned by a female in India observed a significant growth trend and the similar inclination has been observed in most of the developed and developing economies as well. Despite the existing literature, a study on female entrepreneurship is remarked essential particularly in the northeastern region of India, the region has been slow in its progress of economic development compared to the other part of India. The controversial evidence of gender differences in entrepreneurship identified by the academic literature and the shortcomings of the existing research in transition economies being scarce suffers from some important limitations, mainly lack methodological rigour and lack of contingent and explanatory investigations. Though entrepreneurship is coming of age, it is still in a sorry state in Nagaland. The fear among the public persist, the state still suffers from the unavailability of resources, technical knowledge, skilled labourer and mentorship, poor state infrastructural assets procurement of capital and communication networks. Researchers concern in gender system of entrepreneurship is inspired by both the economic and equality implications of the phenomenon.
