Abstract: In the meeting of the Directors of Tribal Research Institutes across the country, held in New Delhi on 24th September 1979 under the aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, it was decided that the Tribal Research Institutes should undertake a study on the working of the LAMPS in the Tribal Sub-Plan areas in their respective States with a view to find out their impacts on the economy of the tribal people. Accordingly, as per the recommendations of the Baw Committee, LAMPs were constituted across rural as well as tribal areas of the country with three main objectives namely, credit, marketing and supply of essential commodities. In Assam, however, while Large Areas Marketing Societies were converted in to LAMPs in the hill areas, Gaon Panchayat Samabai Samitis were constituted with the same objectives as those of the LAMPs. Data from 40 Gaon Panchayat Samabai Sammitis and 4 LAMPs were collected covering a period of 5 years from 1975-76 to 1979-80. This report is an outcome of the same study.
