Abstract: | The Tiwa, also known as the Lalung, are a colourful tribe living in the plains and hills of Central Assam in the districts of Nagaon, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji and Kamrup and the Khasi and the Jayantia Hills district of Meghalaya. They have their own language, culture and traditions distinct from other tribes of North East India. Tiwas are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe in Assam excluding the autonomous districts. This is a book on the socio cultural life of the Tiwa tribe of Assam. It gives a succinct description of the Tiwa of both hills and plains society, its culture, rituals, beliefs and practices, folk dances and songs, the most prominent Jonbeel Mela which is held annually, alongwith the formation and journey of the Tiwa Sahitya Sabha. The book is written in Assamese language. |
