Abstract: The tribal cultural research and training institute established in 1963 owns objectives such as empirical studies on scheduled tribes (ST), socio-economic surveys, formulation of action plans, assess impact of plan programmes that is the progress and shortcoming in implementation process, training official and non-officials, screening ST status claims of candidates seeking admission into educational institutes and services, career guidance and job placements, build up repositories and monitoring progress of implementation. The institution has 2 wings: research and training that work complementary to each other. Research focuses mainly on applied and problem-oriented research. To date (1994) around 469 projects have been completed covering ethnographic studies (65), development research (67), physical anthropology studies(50), evaluation studies (67), tribal development plans (126 and statistical survey studies (660 and 23 other studies. Action-oriented programs such as sub-plan, inter-tribal development plans, etc., modified area development approach plan, primitive tribal group development plan have been formulated. Review meeting check progress of implementation of the provision of protective legislation on a timely basis, seminars to discuss the findings revealed from various research studies are one among the action plans in the research field. Training mainly functions to conduct appraisal training at the district level, organize orientation courses and workshops and also equip and train official and non-official with knowledge of constitution provisions of protective legislation. In our survey, it is revealed that a total of 268 training programmes with 11,681 trainees have been conducted. The training department as one more objective i.e., employment training focusing on common entrance exams via guidance and assistance to unemployed and lower ST class for jobs. Follow up actions have been taken on recommendations of the earlier meetings to discuss on tribal displacement by major projects and their rehabilitation, studies on land alienation, studies on atrocities on SC/STs, backlog vacancies to fill various service categories, Pre-training for SSB exams, large scale training for recruitment, strengthening of the library, an action plan for PTGS in Andhra Pradesh. The study conducted in 31 villages of 18 districts in Andhra Pradesh. Taking into considerations all the above facts the study suggests such as the implementation of land transfer regulation acts, non-legislative measures, food security, demographic studies adaptation for safe drinking, health facilities and immunization projects and tribal economy are key recommendations.
