Abstract

The book Poverty its Impact in Education and Socio Economic Condition of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Communities in Sarukhetri and Pakabetbari Block of Barpeta District, Assam is authored by Dr. Phunu Das and published by, AIRTSC, Guwahati, in 2013. It is a known fact that in India more than one billion people lives in rural area and almost 170 million of them are poor. Poverty is deepest among scheduled castes and scheduled tribes people inhabiting in rural area. About 50% tribal souls fall under poorest category, while it is 40% in case of scheduled caste people. High level of illiteracy, inadequate health care, poor infrastructure and limited access to social services are common among the rural people. Poverty is the root cause of many socio-economic problems including population explosion, unemployment and child labour and rising graph of crimes. In Assam 30% to 40% people live under poverty and about 75% people reside in rural areas. It is observed that in rural areas scheduled castes do not have access to land and therefore is forced to migrate to urban areas very often. On the other hand, Scheduled Tribes in rural areas have much better access to land, but the quality of that land and its productivity is low and yields low income. Thus in terms of income poverty as well as the other indicator of human development like education, health and nutrition the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes have much worse than general population. It is a complex and multifaceted problems and deserves proper understanding. It requires to be examined from different angles and unusual perspective. This book has made an attempt to find out the influence of poverty in some poignant indicators of human development especially among the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes of Assam.
