Abstract: The book Tribal tradition and development in the hill areas of Assam has been edited by Dr Girindra Nath Das. The book is the compilation of the seminar papers along with proceedings, recommendations presented in a seminar on Tribal Tradition and its relation to Development in the Hill areas of Assam organised by District Research Office, Diphu in the year 1996. Altogether there were about 19 papers in the book. The papers are mostly based on Identity crisis, traditional management of land, forest and water, socio cultural heritage, traditional institutions and its role, customary laws etc of the hill areas of Assam. The autonomous district of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills together constitute the hill areas of Assam. In this book it has been found that hill tribe has been maintaining their traditional beliefs, customs through various social and political institutions since time immemorial. But with the spread of Christianity and by coming into contact with other non tribal communities, the hill tribe society has gradually lost its original culture and traditions.
