The Plains Tribes of Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Nowgong

Abstract

There were voluminous books written on the Hill tribes of Assam, but no systematic study was conducted about the plain tribes of Assam. To bring out the life and culture of the plains tribes to the general readers both inside and outside Assam, the Tribal Research Institute has taken the task to collect and process data on them. In this publication efforts has been made to give a pen picture of the eleven plains tribes of Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Nowgong namely - Mishings, Deori Chutias, Sonowal Kacharies, Phakeals, Khamtis, Dowanias, Singphos, Khamyangs, Aitonias, Turungs, Lalungs. No stone has been unturned to make the report authentic and technically accurate. It was endeavoured to present the result of the study in a popular manner as possible avoiding details to be interesting to the general readers.
